That's correct. Customers wont be notified if this option is turned on. Please note that if you want to book an appointment from the backend, this option will be turned on, as well.
As for the next day reminder notifications, this is a separate system, so the cron job would send the notifications, according to your settings.
Is there anyway to default it so if they book through the website they auto get the appt booked notification, but if we book from the backend we have to manually tick this
Unfortunatelly currently no. If you disable this option in Notifcations settings, customers wont get the email notifications, but you would also need to manually tick this option in Appointment settings, when creating a new appointment.
if we untick this will the customer still get notifications if they book online? Including their next day reminder notification?
