Recently wpDataTables released a new version 5.4... this is great, however we use wpEngine hosting provider and they have a feature "Smart Plugin Manager" (SPM) to auto-update all plugins. Their "Smart Plugin Manager" installed the free version 2.1.53 of wpDataTables.
Your pro plugin apparently doesn't have the technical configuration needed for "Smart Plugin Manager" to differentiate the pro version and the free version.
We had wpDataTables 5.3 installed. When it came time to automatically update the plugin, wpEngine's "Smart Plugin Manager" installed the free version 2.1.53 instead of updating to the paid version 5.4.
I contacted wpEngine support and they said this is a plugin settings issue related to how the plugin is named and/or configured.
I don't know the technical details why the paid version isn't being updated properly. They could not fix the error and said we have to contact the plugin developer.
- I am not very familiar with the Smart Plugin Manager, we will ask our 2nd level Team about that issue, and will report back on that as quickly as possible.
What you can do now to switch from Lite to full version;
I just got a confirmation from our 2nd level Team, in regards to the Smart Plugin Manager from your current hosting provider not being able to update wpDataTables correctly with automatic update.
For the time being, i am truly sorry, but there is nothing we can do until our Lite version reaches a version that will be higher than our Premium plugin version.
Right now, the only two possible ways how you can solve this problem is to either disable the Smart Plugin manager ( or exclude our plugin from its managed updates),
or to change your hosting provider.
Again, we are sincerely sorry for that inconvenience, for the time being it is like that, until our Lite version surpasses the version of the Premium plugin.
