We have an MS SQL Server/database hosted on Azure and are trying to connect to wpDataTables. We consistently get this error message;
"wpDataTables could not connect to mssql server. mssql said: There was a problem with your SQL connection - could not find driver" despite being able to connect via SSMS and Azure Data studio.
Can you please check if you have the following drivers installed, and activated?
These drivers need to be installed and activated on the server where your WordPress website is. After you install and activate those drivers, it should work fine.
If you're not sure how to install the drivers, please reach out to your hosting provider.
However, to confirm, the drivers should be installed on the web host server and NOT on the database server we are trying to connect to (which is hosted in Azure SQL Server)?
If we switch the DB to be MySQL instead of MSSQL, are the drivers the same? Our hosting provider (Flywheel) does not support any of those 3 drivers listed for MSSQL.
This seems quite a basic requirement - how have your other customers implemented this with similar hosting providers?
The drivers for MySQL and MSSQL are not the same, so if you intend to use both connections, drivers for these database types need to be installed on the WordPress server.
The server to which wpDataTables is connecting has its own method of establishing the connection, and we're using PHPs logic of connecting to separate connections. The errors that you see are what your server returns, so there's no additional log within wpDataTables that would distinctively show you what's behind the error.
I can't recall exactly which hosting providers lacked the support of the additional DB driver installation, but those are usually imposed on lower hosting plans. If you're a premium user (if you're not using shared hosting or the lowest possible plan), they should install the drivers based on the customer's request.
We have a paid plan with Flywheel and they have confirmed they will not install additional drivers on the server, therefore how are we meant to proceed with using this plugin?
We have full management and ownership of the end server and DB we are trying to connect through to, but not the actual web server where the website sits (as that is owned by Flywheel).
If we cannot reach a suitable way forward, I think we will have to look at a refund and using an alternative plugin unfortunately.
That'd be really unfortunate, but I can understand if it comes to this. Before confirming you want to refund the purchase, can you please provide me with the connection details in a PRIVATE response, so I can try from my end?
Also, if you could share your wp-admin (administrator) log-in credentials with me, so we can test it on your site directly, that'd be great.
I'll check which driver is being used from my local environment, and see if there are maybe some errors on your site. If that doesn't work, we'll refund your money, of course.
Just remember to post a PRIVATE response, since this is a public ticket.

Hi
We will check the drivers are installed.

Hi again Nathan
Yes, these drivers should be installed on the server where wpDataTables is installed (the website's server, not the server where the database lies).
