Today I found out that the confirmation mails for a booking were not sent (both employee and customer). I use the SMTP setting to send them via Gmail.
I realized this is because my connected Gmail Account blocked Amelias access: I got an email around the same time from Google with a "critical warning" because "someone just tried to login with your password" and telling me to secure my account because it might be hacked.
Now, less secure apps were definitely allowed in my Google Account (or GSuite / Google Workspace, or however they decided to call it this month) and it has worked previously when I tested it. So this was not a configuration issue, but simply Google not playing nice.
I have noticed Google state that they will deactivate the "allow less secure apps" setting automatically if it is "not used". Whatever that means, they give no time frame for this or any further information at all.
I very sparsely get bookings through my site, as people usually just fill the contact form. So my conclusion is that there was too long a time between the last booking and this one and therefore Google decided that the less secure app is "not used" and blocked it. I had to activate the setting again manually to get it to work again.
Any chance of resolving this peacefully, before I go full on berserk towards Google support for not trusting / allowing their paying customers to make educated decisions for themselves?
Or alternatively - why is Amelia not considered a secure app and what would it take for it to be accepted by our Google overlords?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Daniel
PS.: Making this ticket public because I feel this might be of interest to other people also.
Unfortunately, there's nothing that you can configure differently in Amelia to make it work better. For the SMTP to be registered as a more secure app, we'd need to modify our code, and the way of access. There are a lot of plugins that work the same way. For example WP Mail SMTP is also not registered as a secure app with Google, but it is. So is Amelia, but the code behind it would be rather difficult.
We'd need to configure the plugin so it is added through OAuth (if I understood our developers correctly). At the moment, the workaround here would be to use WP Mail. That requires no external settings and issues with Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook and other mailing providers.

I'm also have the same issue and would like to be able to use this with Gmail.
I would however prefer not to need to compromise security of my email if WPamelia is deemed not sufficiently secure.
Please could you provide an update as to what is being done to ensure wpamelia is considered secure and the estimates timeline to an update.
Many thanks,
Jamie
Hello guys, thanks for updating us on that.
