If I understand you right you can set for this column Filter type that you need and this column can be searchable by column filter. Also, you can search this values with Global search above the table.

Yes for foreign keys columns you need to insert exact the same values to get the results. My suggestion is to remove that global search(turn off Main search option) and to use Filters above the table with option Filters in a form on SORTING AND FILTERING tab in table settings and then for foreign keys column to use select box filter type. You can disable column filtering for column that you don't need.
