My hosting company, SiteGround, is recommending a move to PHP 7.1 in preparation for the next release of WordPress. They tell me that wpDataTables is not compatible with PHP 7.1.
Can you advise when you will make the changes necessary to be compatible, or are they wrong about your compatibility. If you need to make changes, you might want to go ahead and get compatible with PHP 7.2 which is coming to WP soon after 7.1
We use wpDataTables with PHP 7.3, as you can see in my setup:
It has been compatible with versions 7+ for quite some time now, and there are no issues with this.
Can you, please, ask them how they figured wpDataTables is not compatible with this, since you're the second customer coming from SiteGround with the same question? Are they seeing some warnings, or errors?
Thanks for your quick reply. It's good to know that wpDataTables is compatible with 7.1, 7.2 and even 7.3 of PHP!
SiteGround advised me that they built a proprietary compatibility checker which they used to check the plugins on sites running PHP versions below 7.1. They are introducing a managed PHP program where they will automatically upgrade sites (if you optionally sign up) so long as your plugins and themes are compatible.
I also got this message about two other plugins and the author of one of those, ARI Adminer, advised me that his plugin is fully compatible as well.
SiteGround will not divulge the specifics, since they see the tool as a business advantage, but perhaps you (and maybe ARI Adminer developer) could contact them directly and help them improve the tool, since false positives will hurt the value of their tool. Or perhaps they can show you a situation you haven't seen which is incompatible, and you could fix it. Win/Win. To be fair to SG, the ydid advise me that their tool could provide a false positive and I could test by manually upgrading my PHP version and then going back if there was a problem.
Thanks again for getting back to me quickly and if there is anything I can do to assist don't hesitate to ask.
I already alerted my team about this, and if we do get another complaint about this, I'm sure we will contact SiteGround and see what we can do to remove this false positive.
If you have any further questions or issues, please feel free to open a new ticket, and we'll gladly help.
