Every time I try to update, manually by on-site and ftp AND the auto-update, the plugin breaks. The front-end stops loading, as well as settings and a couple other screens in back end.
Any ideas of what could be causing this?
Also, Is there any way to customize the front-end display any further?

Can you please explain me what exactly doesn't work? It is most probably caching issue. When you update the plugin you need to clear the browser cache.

- Something like this is possible only with the custom CSS. Can you tell me exactly what you want to modify?
