it seems that using the wdt_column_filter[] works fine.. but if I want to change the column number to a new number say 0 and have moved that col to the 0 position the filter no longer works.. is this correct? I would need to have the col in the 0 position at the time the data was brought into wpdatatables?

No it should be working. Can you please provide me link of the page where you have this table and where you are using url filters so I can take a look?
It is hard to assume what cause the issue if we don't have access. Can you try to reproduce that issue on our live presentation sandbox and if you reproduce same behavior please take a screencast(video) so we can see it.

well I can't really.. but here is the situation
Table 1 part number field is in 0 position so wdt_column_filter[0]
tabe 2 part number field is in 2 position so wdt_column_filter[2]
Changing the position in the backend of table 2 to field position 0 saving
changing filter to wdt_column_filter[0]= shows no results..
