Is it possible to search for a name in a cell that specifically starts with a certain character NOT just one that contains the letter?
For example, if I'm searching for "Smith", typing "S" will bring up all entries that START with "S". Continuing with "m" will bring up only the names that start with "Sm".
This is a very common way of searching but I don't see how to do it with wpDataTables.
Unfortunately I can not tell you precisely the date, as we are now working on some other features and some minor fixes. when this will be released but I can say that this feature is on our TODO list and I hope that it will be included in our next future versions of the plugin.

Sorry to disappoint you but unfortunately something like this is not possible with the plugin built in features at the moment.
But your idea is quite interesting and I will add it on our TODO list so maybe we can implement it in future updates.
