Feature Request: Detail View

In my tables, I have certain columns, such as "Notes" that wouldn't make sense to display in the grid view, since they contain large amounts of text. However, I'd still like the user to be able to view the data from these types of columns.

Therefore, I'm requesting that you add a "Detail View" feature. This would display a button at the end of each row, which the user could click on to display a detail view of the data from that row.

In the Column Setup screen, the admin could specify for each column, whether the column appears in the grid view, the detail view, or both.

    Hi bkonia,
    Thank you for your purchase.

I can suggest you some workaround and maybe you can test it by yourself to see if it will do the trick.
    Example:
If your table is Responsive, for column "Notes" check "Hide on mobiles" option in Optional column setup.
Than in wpDataTables settings page change the mobile width to desired number( for example some large number ) Take a look at the attachment.
    Hope this can help.

I will also forward your suggestion to our lead developer and maybe in future we will implement it.
Thank you for sharing ideas with us.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Bogdan,

There are two problems with this workaround:

    1. It would defeat the purpose of having a responsive design, as it would cause the page to always render in mobile view.

    2. Although it would hide the Notes column, in the grid, there's still no way to view the notes in a detail view. I realize you can get a detail view with editable tables, but Im looking for a way to get a read-only detail view for non-editable tables. In other words, for editable tables, we have an Edit button, we can click on to open a detail screen. However, for non-editable tables, we need a View button, that would allow the user to view the fields for a given row in a vertical form layout, rather than being constrained to the horizontal row view.

I would appreciate if you would stress to your developers the importance of adding this feature in an upcoming release. I've worked with many database front end GUI's like this and the ability to display a row in form view is pretty standard. This is the first tool I've worked with that doesn't offer this feature.

    Hi bkonia,

You are right, but unfortunately this is a workaround not a proper solution. I just give you my suggestion because we do not have that feature.

Each user needs something for himself - you assume that ability to display a row with detail view is basic, some other users can assume that calculating correlation coefficient or foreign key is basic and must be built-in. But we have a list what new feature would customers like to see. We are trying to satisfy both sides and that is why i will add this functionality to our TODO list, but I can not urge this request because we have a lot of tasks for upcoming 2.0 update.

Also thank you for your detailed suggestion and for understanding.
